Devils open with win over Baruch, fall to #20 Juniata

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia State opened its 2013 women's softball season by splitting a pair of matches Friday at the Cortland Red Dragon Invitational.

The Blue Devils started the day with a 25-16, 28-26, 25-18 victory over Baruch, followed by a 25-17, 25-10. 25-8 loss to Juniata, ranked No. 20 in NCAA Division III by American Volleyball Coaches Association..

Against Baruch, Sara Madison led all hitters with 14 kills and 39.4 percent success rate. Kelly Edinger had 36 assists and added seven digs to the defensive effort.

Lauren Hokaj and Brittney Kelly led that effort with 19 and 12 digs, respectively, while Hannah Manning had six total blocks. Kaitlin Orcutt and Jessica DiChristopher added to the offense with eight kills each. Paulina Rein had two service aces.

The Blue Devils (1-1) struggled with their receiving and hitting in the loss to Juniata. They managed 19 kills combined, five each by Orcutt and DiChristopher. Edinger assisted on 14 of the Blue Devils' 35 points. Kelly had 13 digs, Rein eight, and DiChristopher two blocks.

The Blue Devils are back twice Saturday -- at 11 a.m. vs. Lebanon Valley, at 1:30 p.m. vs. University of Rochester.
