BOXSCORE ERIE, Pa. – Fredonia State fell in overtime to Baldwin-Wallace, 2-1, in the season-opening match for both teams during the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament at Penn State Behrend.
BW's Michael Brennan took a short one-touch pass and scored a one-touch shot into a vacated net five minutes into the extra period.
The Blue Devils rallied from a 1-0 deficit to force the overtime.They endeavored to score a tying goal with nine shots in the second half. Three of them came during one long possession.
A pair of shots by
Brandon Schick sailed wide, then high.
Luke Tylutki also was wide.
A transition by Behrend led to one shot, which was blocked by a Devil defender. Fredonia State quickly transitioned back to offense and tied the score at 1-1 as
Jakob Persons scored on a volley from inside the box in the 67th minute.
Jay Dry was credited with an assist.
Fredonia State had its best scoring chance of the first half in the 20th minute when a shot by Tylutki banged off the goal post.
Having averted that, Baldwin-Wallace went on the offensive.
Erik Sokol gave the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead as he took advantage of a 1-on-1 with Blue Devil goalkeeper Mike Schreiner in the 25th minute.
The Yellowjackets kept up the pressure for the next three minutes, only to see Schreiner make a pair of saves. He finished the game with seven saves. Yellowjacket goalkeeper Tyler Beaton had three saves.
The Blue Devils were outshot 4-2 and out-cornered 4-0 in the first half, and 15-11 in the game. After taking seven fouls in the first half, they had only four during the next 45 minutes. They then committed three fouls during overtime.
Fredonia State will play 5 p.m. Saturday against the loser of Friday night's other game between host Penn State Behrend and Bethany.
