BOXSCORE CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia State will await a decision from the national selection committee Sunday night to learn if they have received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III women's lacrosse tournament.
The Blue Devils bid to become an automatic qualifying by winning the SUNYAC Tournament title was thwarted Friday with a 10-3 loss to the Geneseo Blue Knights at SUNY Cortland. The Blue Knights will meet the host Cortland Red Dragons with the conference title -- and the AQ -- at stake beginning 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 14-3 overall after a 14-0 start. All three losses came to SUNYAC teams with a national profile. Cortland is No. 4 while Brockport and Geneseo received votes in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association rankings.
The Blue Devils were No. 16 in the latest IWLCA poll.
Geneseo led throughout Friday's semifinal and built a 5-0 lead before the Blue Devils scored for the first time, an unassisted goal by
Kaila Fox (Clifton Springs), her 21st of the season, with 5:54 left in the first half.
Shelby DePew (Macedon) scored from the free position, her 11th goal of tthe season, at 23:33 of the second half to make it 5-2 and the Blue Devils appeared to make it 5-3, only to have the goal waived off. Geneseo scored the next four goals before
Rachael Reinis (Webster) scored her 25th goal of the season with 9:06 left.
Senior goalkeeper
Casey Chiesa (Baldwinsville) finished with nine saves in what could have been her final collegiate game unless the NCAA tournament committee awards Fredonia State one of six at-large bids. The announcement will be made Sunday night.
Also potentially appearing in their final collegiate games were Fox, Reinis, and
Erin Edson (Amherst).
