BOXSCORE MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Fredonia State fell 7-2 to Allegheny in a game called after six innings due a severe thunderstorm.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled.
The Blue Devils (5-14) were leading 2-0 until just before the game became official. The host Gators (12-13) scored six runs in the last of the fifth, then added their final run in the sixth, before the game was called. Allegheny second baseman Sadie Stuart homered in each of the innings and also had a double.
Both Fredonia State runs came in the top of the first without the benefit of a hit. Lead-off hitter
Katie Bartkowiak reached on an error, stole second, and went to third on a passed ball.
Alyssa Morgan walked and enticed the Allegheny pitcher, Caitlin Nealer, into a throwing error which allowed Bartkowiak to score.
Morgan scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by
Megan Medina before Nealer settled down. She finished with a two-hitter -- singles by Medina and
Jess Lauck -- with one walk and eight strikeouts. It was her 20th pitching decision of the season (10-10).
Alyssa Brognano was the losing pitcher (3-6).
The Blue Devils return to SUNYAC competition when they play host to Bufffalo State. The scheduled doubleheader is set to start at noon.
NOTES: Batkowiak is nationally ranked in a somewhat dubious category -- No. 3 at being hit by pitches. She had been plunked a school-record 10 timesand was averaging 0.56 HBPs per game through Sunday. A senior outfielder from Fredonia, Bartkowiak has been hit by pitches 32 times in four collegiate seasons. She was hit nine times in 2010, which was the previous Blue Devil single-season record. She's also ranked No. 3 and No. 4 on the all-time single-season list.
