BOXSCORE 2 HAMBURG, N.Y. -- Fredonia State closed out its regular season with a doubleheader sweep Tuesday over Hilbert, 17-3 and 8-4.
The Blue Devils improved to 18-14 heading into the SUNYAC Tournament. They had a key five-run fifth inning in each game of the doubleheader.
In Game 1, they trailed 3-2 after four innings before
Conner Lorenzo (Rochester) led off the fifth with a hit. After
Jake Nowak (Depew) dropped a sacrifice bunt and
Brian Sheehan (West Seneca) walked,
Dillon Lowe (Pittsford) squeeze bunted Lorenzo home for the first of five runs.
Matt Casilio (Webster) had a single,
John Bennett (Churchville) an RBI single, and
Kyle Koslowski (Hopewell Junction) an RBI double later in the inning.
The Blue Devils put the game away with four more runs in the sixth and six in the seventh.
Carl Wolf (Hilton) started on the mound and left after five innings and allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked two. Joseph Tingue (South Dayton) and
Zachary Jordon (Akron) pitched one scoreless inning in relief.
In Game 2, the Blue Devils led 3-1 entering the fifth inning. Just like the opener, the bats came alive. The five-run inning included singles by Bennett, Lowe, Casilio,
Dan Fetes (Webster),
Quinn Danahy (Buffalo),
Erik Krohl (Syracuse), and Nowak. Bennett and Nowak had five hits each in the doubleheader. Bennett also had six RBI, all in Game 1.
Kyle Morse (Jamestown) scattered eight hits over five innings to pick up the win. He allowed three runs, two of them earrned.
Kyle Grey (Frewsburg) allowed one run on two hits over the final two innings.
The Blue Devils enter the SUNYAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will meet No. 1 seed and tournament host Cortland at noon Friday. Oswego and New Paltz will meet in the other first-round game.
The double-elimination tournament is scheduled to run through Sunday.
