Blue Devils, Medaille split

BOXSCORE 1 | BOXSCORE 2 FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State and Medaille split a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Blue Devil Field. The Mavericks won the opener, 6-4, while the Blue Devils bounced back in the nightcap, 5-3.

Senior right-hander Raela Wiley-Delp (Wilson) pitched a complete game and improved her record to 3-7 in the Blue Devils' win. She scattered 10 hits and walked three. She also pitched two scoreless inning of relief in the first game.

Freshman Izzy Simon (Macedon) went 3 for 3 to lead a 12-hit Fredonia State offense. Senior Tina Schwartzmeyer (West Seneca) and sophomore Cherise Gunnell (Falconer) had two hits each. Schwartzmeyer also had two hits in Game 1.

The Blue Devils (8-21) broke on top with four runs in the third inning. Senior Anne Wasik (Fredonia) delivered a two-run single, freshman Madeline Medina (Hamburg) had a sacrifice fly, and senior Jamie Atkins (East Amherst) drove in a run with an infield ground out. The Blue Devils added an unearned run in the fourth.

Mary Bongiovanni led the Medaille offense with three doubles. Amanda Mesi (6-7) was the losing pitcher.

In the first game, Kiera Diana hit a two-run homer to highlight a four-run fourth inning for Medaille. It gave the Mavericks a 5-0 lead.

The Blue Devils responded with four runs in the fifth, including a run-run double by Schwartzmeyer. Gunnell followed with an RBI double and Medina with an RBI single.

Sophomore Kate Nicholson (Heuvelton) had two hits for the Blue Devils and senior right-hander Alyssa Brognano (New Paltz) was tagged with the loss (4-9). Nicole Gulisano (7-7) was the winning pitcher.

The Blue Devils close out the home portion of their season Wednesday vs. Alfred. Scheduled game time is 3:30 p.m.
