Devils claim Monday matinee, 7-1, over New Paltz

BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State baseball team downed visiting New Paltz 7-1 on Monday afternoon at Ludwig Field. Starting pitcher Sean Larson (Angola/St. Francis) went seven shutout innings, and the Devil offense opened the game with four first-inning runs to propel them to victory.

Larson (2-1) scattered three hits over seven innings, walking two and striking out three.

The Devils got on the board in the first. Brian Sheehan (West Seneca/Orchard Park) singled home Conner Lorenzo (Rochester/Brighton) to open the scoring. After a walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases, Kenny Johnston (Buffalo/Kenmore West) drove in two more runs with a single. An Erik Krohl (Syracuse/West Genesee) sacrifice fly plated the fourth run.

The Devils would be held in check until the sixth inning when they would add three more runs. John Bennett (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) doubled home two runs, and came around to score on a base hit by Lorenzo.

Relief pitcher Zachary Jordon (Akron) finished the game giving up one run over the final two innings.

Johnston led the offense with three hits and two RBI. Lorenzo added a pair of hits.

New Paltz saw its six-game win streak come to an end, and now stands at 8-5 in the conference and 12-13 overall.

Fredonia State improves to 6-4 in the SUNYAC and 15-7 overall. They travel to Brockport for a noon doubleheader Tuesday. First pitch is slated for noon.
