FREDONIA,N.Y. -- Fredonia State opened its 2013 women's lacrosse season Saturday with a 7-5 win over the College of Wooster at University Stadium.
Rachael Reinis (Webster) and
Kaila Fox (Clifton Springs) had two goals each while
Katie Kleine (Cazenovia) had a goal and two assists.
Fredonia State senior goalkeeper
Casey Chiesa (Baldwinsville) made 15 saves.
Shelby Stone had four goals on five shots for the Fighting Scots.
It was the opening game of the season for both teams.
Fredonia State broke on top on an unassisted goal by Kleine before Wooster tied the game on Stone's first goal. The Blue Devils closed out the first half with a 4-0 run on goals by
Shelby DePew (Macedon), Fox, and two by Reinis.
Wooster twice cut their deficit to two goals when they scored the first two and the last two goals of the second half, three by Stone and one by Molly Sennett. Sandwiched between those four were goals by Fox and
Katie Glagolev (Webster) for the Blue Devils.
Wooster's Shawna Ferris was credited with 17 saves.
Reinis was Fredonia State's top field player with eight groundballs and one caused turnover, while Kleine had six groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Mary Bruton (Palmyra) also had three caused turnovers.
Before the game, members of the 2012 team unveiled an NCAA Tournament banner on the University Stadium fence. Last year's team was the first in Fredonia State women's lacrosse history to play in the national tournament.
