Devils open SUNYAC season with win at Oswego

BOXSCORE OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Fredonia State defeated Oswego, 13-5, in the SUNYAC opener for both teams Saturday.

Marissa Cussins had five goals while Katie Kleine had four goals and three assists for the Blue Devils, who improved to 7-0 overall. Both women also had solid days in the field. Cussins was credited with four draw controls and four ground balls. Kleine had five draws, five ground balls, and four caused turnovers.

Erin Edson, Shelby DePew, Rachael Reinis, and Katie Glagolev had one goal each. Reinis also had five draw controls.

Blue Devil goalkeeper Casey Chiesa was called on to make four saves.

Oswego jumped to a 1-0 lead before the Blue Devils strung together the next three goals, two by Kleine and one by DePew. The Lakers (3-4) cut their deficit to 3-2 before the Blue Devils scored eight unanswered goals -- two to close out the first half with a 5-2 lead, and six straight to open the second half. Cussins had all five of her goals during the run.

The Blue Devils visit Elmira on Tuesday before playing host to New Paltz and Wittenberg next Saturday and Sunday.
