BOXSCORE CLERMONT, Fla. -- Two University of Chicago pitchers combined for a five-inning no-hitter Sunday night and dealt Fredonia State a 12-0 loss in women's softball at the National Training Center.
Kim Cygan pitched the first four innings before Emily Ashbridge completed the gem with a 1-2-3 fifth inning. The duo recorded seven strikeouts while Cygan issued two walks.
The Maroons (2-1) scored five unearned runs in the top of the first off Blue Devil starting pitcher
Raela Wiley-Delp. They added two runs in the second inning, four in the third, and one in the fifth off reliever
Alyssa Brognano.
The loss dropped Wiley-Delp to 1-1 and the Blue Devils to 2-3 overall.
First pitch was scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, yet thunderstorms in central Florida disrupted the schedule. Start time was pushed back to 11 p.m. under the NTC lights. The final out was recorded before midnight, thus keeping the teams from starting a game one day and finishing it the next without interruption.
The storm also resulted in the postponement of the scheduled 7 p.m. game vs. St. Olaf. It or another game might be added to the Blue Devils' schedule before their spring trip ends Thursday.
In the meantime, the Blue Devils are off Monday before returning to action Tuesday vs Oberlin at 5 p.m. and D'Youville at 7 p.m.
