Devils hang on over Chapman

BOXSCORE ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Fredonia State overcame an early deficit Saturday en route to a 13-10 victory over Chapman.

Down 3-1 in the first half, the Blue Devils -- improving to 5-0 -- went on a four-goal run to take the lead for the rest of the game.

The run included a go-ahead goal by Katie Glagolev at the 9:07 mark with a one-timer off a teammate's forward pass. Marissa Cussins scored on a run against the flow of the Chapman defense to complete the run and give the Blue Devils a 5-3 lead.

At the other end of the field, goalkeeper Casey Chiesa made a pair of saves during an ensuing Chapman possession. Both times she came off her goal line to challenge the shooter.

Chiesa finished the game with eight saves.

Katie Kleine scored the first goal of the second half with a free-position shot to up the Devil advantage to 7-4. A Chapman goal was followed by three straight goals by the Blue Devils, resulting in their largest lead of the game, 10-5.

Chapman mounted a comeback with three straight goals, yet could get no closer than three in the second half. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 8-3.

Cussins led the Blue Devils with five goals while Kleine had three and Glagolev two.

Fredonia State completes it spring trip to southern California with a visit Monday night to Occidental. Game time is 10 p.m. Eastern time.
