BOXSCORE 2 CLERMONT, Fla. -- Fredonia State dropped a pair of well-pitched games against two nationally ranked teams, 3-1 to Tufts and 2-1 to Carthage, in NCAA Division III women's softball Saturday at the National Training Center.
Senior right-hander
Danielle Shelp started both games. She finished with a complete-game six-hitter against No. 13 ranked Tufts, and allowed three hits over the first four innings against Carthage.
Senior right-hander
Alyssa Brognano pitched the final three innings vs. Carthage and allowed a walk-off, two-out single. The loss dropped her record to 1-1.
Senior right fielder
Anne Wasik accounted for all of Fredonia State's scoring. Against Tufts, Wasik led off the first inning with a walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a single by senior center fielder
Katie Bartkowiak, and scored on a single by freshman second baseman
Alyssa Morgan.
The run cut the Blue Devils' deficit to 2-1. Tufts added an insurance run in the sixth inning as the Jumbos improved to 12-1..
Against Carthage, ranked No. 14 in the NFCA poll, the Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Wasik walked, advanced to second on a walk, went to third on a single by Bartkowiak, and scored on a wild pitch.
Shelp yielded a game-tying homner in the last of the fourth inning before departing the circle.
The Lady Reds improved to 5-2 while the Blue Devils fell to 2-2 heading into Sunday games vs. the University of Chicago (3 p.m.) and St. Olaf (7 p.m.).
