BOXSCORE
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State's
John DeFeo (Glen Head) scored with 3:55 left in regulation to provide the final piece of a see-saw 5-5 SUNYAC tie with the Cortland Red Dragons.
DeFeo was stationed to the right of Cortland goaltender Lyle Rocker when a turnover by a Red Dragon defender led directly to the goal. It was DeFeo's second of the season. He was also the fifth Blue Devil to score a goal on Pink The RInk night.
The Blue Devils wore pink jerseys and sweaters in support of the American Cancer Society.
Cortland held a 27-26 edge in shots on goal, including 5 to 1 in the five-minute overtime.
The tie gave the Blue Devils a 5-7-2 SUNYAC mark and moved them into sole possession of fourth place, one point ahead of Buffalo State. Cortland finished the night at 3-8-2 and in a three-way time for seventh place, one point out of the sixth and final playoff spot.
Neither team led by more than a goal and each of them scored consecutive goals only once. The Blue Devils trailed 1-0 before
Chris Jung (Sandy, Utah) scored at 18:42 of the first period, and a power-play goal by
Jared Wynia (Calgary, Alberta) made it 2-1 at 4:02 of the second.
Cortland's consecutive tallies came later in the second period. Nick Zappia scored his second of two goals to forge a 3-3 tie at 7:27 before Ryan Wagner made it 4-3 Red Dragons at 8:51. Both goals came on Cortland power plays.
Fredonia State regained the momentum at 18:26 of the second period on a goal by defenseman
Brad Nunn (Stony Brook), his first of the season and seventh as a collegiate in 99 games.
Adam Bevilacqua put Cortland back in front, 5-4, with his second goal of the game at 6:11 of the third period. That set the stage for DeFeo's equalizer.
Alex Perkins (St. Albert, Alberta) had an unassisted short-handed goal for the Blue Devils at 7:27 of the second period.
Mark Friesen (Calgary, Alberta) finished with 22 saves, one more than Cortland's Rocker.
The Blue Devils play their final regular-season home game Saturday when they entertain No. 2 ranked Oswego. The 7 p.m. faceoff will be preceded by Senior Night ceremonies at the Steele Hall Ice Arena.
