BUFFALO, N.Y. – Fredonia State was eliminated from the SUNYAC Tournament with a 6-0 first-round loss Wednesday at Buffalo State.

The Blue Devils (7-16-3) came into the game having defeated the Bengals in their three previous post-season meetings since 2007, including two in Buffalo.

Instead, the Bengals (13-11-2) won the third meeting of the season between the teams and advanced to the SUNYAC semifinals. They will face No. 1 seed Oswego on Saturday.

Fredonia State junior goaltender Mark Friesen (Calgary, Alberta) stopped 32 of 38 shots.

Buffalo State goaltender Kevin Carr made 17 saves.

Brett Hope and Ryan Salkeld scored first-period goals for the Bengals. Nick Melligan made it 3-0 with a power-play goal in the second period.

Melligan, Elijah Cohen, and Matt Bessing completed the scoring goals in the last five minutes of the third period.

The Blue Devils were without leading scorer Mat Hehr (Sherwood Park, Alberta), who missed his final collegiate game with an injury sustained in a 4-2 loss to Buffalo State last Friday.

Six Fredonia State seniors dressed their final game – forwards Will McLaughlin (Mountain Top, Pa.), Brett Mueller (Queensbury), and Chris Jung (Sandy, Utah); and defensemen Ken Nosky (Cheektowaga), Ian Cosgrove (Rochester, Mich.), and Brad Nunn (Stony Brook).

In addition, Friesen is scheduled to graduate early in May.
