Upset-minded Blue Devils fall short vs. Geneseo

BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Zachary Vit scored midway through the final period to lift nationally-ranked Geneseo over Fredonia State, 4-3, in SUNYAC men's hockey at Steele Hall.

Skating down the left wing, Vit received a short cross-ice pass from Johnathan Sucese and beat Blue Devil freshman goaltender Christopher Eiserman (Newburyport, Mass.) to the stick side at the 9:09 mark.

It was the second goal of the game for Vit, and his seventh of the year. That earned him the No. 1 star.

Fredonia State junior Jared Wynia (Calgary, Alberta) earned the No. 2 star with a pair of goals, his sixth and seventh of the season. It was the third time this season he has scored two goals in a SUNYAC game.

Geneseo's Stephan Collins also had two goals, also giving him seven this season, to earn the No. 3 star.

The win lifted the Blue Knights to 8-2 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC. They are ranked No. 12 by D3Hockey.com and No. 14 by USCHO.com.

The Blue Devils fell to 2-6-2 overall and 2-3-2 in the SUNYAC.

Scoring the first goal has been a problem for the Blue Devils this season, although not on Saturday. Following a Geneseo turnover behind their net, sophomore forward Chad Bennett (Burlington, Ont.) picked up the loose puck and fed a pass in front. Freshman forward Garrett Moore (Arcade) scored his first collegiate goal into an open right side just 11 seconds into the game.

Collins erased Geneseo's deficit with his first of two goals midway through the first period. Wynia scored both of his goals in the third period to give the Blue Devils a 3-2 lead heading into the final 20 minutes.

While the Blue Devils have had trouble scoring early, they've had their most success late -- yet that trend was also reversed on Saturday. Collins scored just 25 seconds into the final period to tie the score at 3-3 before Vit netted the game-winner.

Geneseo's goaltender Nick Horrigan earned the victory with 27 saves, including 10 in the third period. Eiserman finished with 33 saves in the Fredonia State net.

Saturday's game completed the Blue Devils' first semester of games. They return to action at home Jan. 7 vs. Elmira.
