Devils settle Pioneers, 79-65

(Elmira/Elmira Free) 26, as they cruised past Alfred State, 79-65, on Saturday.
Robert Lyles (Peekskill) had 18 points and five assists, John Kovach (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) added 13 points and five boards and Alexander Grace (Bemus Point/Maple Grove) added 10 points.

Clark also added five assists, five steals and four blocks to his line.

Alfred State (1-9) was led by Tommy Hutson with 30 points.

Tied 10-all early in the first half, Clark nailed a three pointer give the Devils a lead they would maintain throughout the game. They took a 32-25 lead into the half.

For the game, the Devils had a 31-26 edge in rebounds. The Devil's biggest edge came in shooting percentage. They converted 28 of 50 shots from the floor (56 percent), while Alfred State was only able to shoot 19 of 54 (35 percent).

From the line, the Devils were 18 of 32, while the Pioneers knocked down 21 of 26 (81 percent) of their opportunities.

Clark shot 9 of 14 from the field and was six of six from the line. Lyles added a trio of three pointers.

The meeting was the first ever between the two teams. Alfred State is transitioning from a junior college into an NCAA Division III institution.

The Devils (3-6) are off until Jan. 10 and 11 when they travel to Oswego and Cortland for a pair of SUNYAC contests.
