BOXSCORE NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Cortland avenged an earlier 3-0 loss to Fredonia State with a 3-0 win of its own Friday in the first round of the single-elimination SUNYAC Women's Volleyball championship tournament at SUNY New Paltz.

The Red Dragons emerged with set wins of 25-21, 25-23, and 25-18 to keep the Blue Devils from advancing to the SUNYAC semifinals for the sixth straight year. Instead, the Red Dragons will meet Buffalo State in a semifinal match Saturday afternoon.

Cortland improved to 15-21, including a 25-29, 25-10, 25-19 loss to the Blue Devils when the teams met last month in Brockport in SUNYAC Pool Play. Meanwhile, the loss dropped the Blue Devils to 25-9 and brought an end to what had been a 15-match winning streak.

Fredonia State statisticians credited sophomore opposite Paulina Rein (Baldwinsville) with a team-high seven kills, while sophomore middle blocker Jessica DiChristopher (Cheektowaga) and freshman outside hitter Sara Madison (Rochester) had six kills each.

The Blue Devils combined for 31 kills against 25 attack errors.

Sophomore setter Kelly Edinger (Rochester) registered 27 assists, and senior outside hitter/middle blocker Hannah Manning (Apalachin) had four services aces.

Defensively, sophomore outside hitter/libero Brittany Kelly (North Tonawanda) led the Blue Devils with 10 digs, and Rein had nine. Madison and DeChristopher had two block assists each.

In addition to Manning, fellow seniors outside hitter Kaitlin Orcutt (West Seneca) and libero Lauren O'Hara (Canandaigua) were appearing in their final SUNYAC Tournament match.
