BOXSCORE BUFFALO, N.Y. – Junior forward
Jared Wynia (Calgary, Alberta) scored two two power-play goals and freshmen
Blake Forslund (Owen Sound, Ont.) and
Marcus Moles (Lake Placid, N.Y.) each scored their first collegiate goals in Fredonia State's 4-4 tie with Buffalo State in SUNYAC men's hockey Friday.
Both of Wynia's goals – his fourth and fifth of the season – came in the third period and lifted the Blue Devils (2-4-1 overall, 2-2-1 SUNYAC) into a 4-2 lead. Buffalo State's Adam Rossi and Shane Avery countered with goals in the final 5:30 to send the game into the scoreless overtime.
Fredonia State freshman goaltender
Christopher Eiserman (Newburyport, Mass.) made 25 saves, none bigger than a series of stops in the second period, while the Blue Devils outshot the Bengals 40-29. Buffalo State's Kevin Carr was credited with 36 saves. Ben Kramer and Dan Turgeon had the first two Bengal goals. Buffalo State finished the game with a 3-2-2 record.
Slow starts have been the norm for both teams this season. The Bengals came into the game having been outshot 97-57, while the Blue Devils had been outscored 11-3. Both trends continued Friday night as the Bengals were outshot 11-7, while the Blue Devils were outscored 1-0 – a power-play goal by Kramer at the 7:04 mark. Kramer's shot from near the blue line eluded Eiserman, who had been screened. It marked the sixth time this season the Blue Devils had allowed the first goal in a game.
The Bengals came out firing start of the second period, yet were unable to add to their lead. The complexion of the game changed within the next few minutes. First, Forslund picked up puck near left faceoff dot, skated across the slot, and connected on a wrist shot into the top shelf to tie the score at 1-1. Then, Eiserman made several big stops during successive Fredonia State penalties, including a 5-on-3 Buffalo State advantage for 41 seconds.
Moles gave Fredonia State a 2-1 lead with a shot from the left point which beat Carr, again into the top of the net. Nice passing set up Turgeon's goal later in the second period for a 2-2 tie.
Fredonia State retook the lead, 3-2, on the first of Wynia's two power-play goals just 48 seconds into the third period. His shot from above the right faceoff circle was set up by a pair of passes from sophomores
Ryan Wilkinson (Calgary, Alberta) and
Mitch Kaufmann (Red Deer, Alberta).
Wynia scored again, this time from near the right faceoff dot, at 11:59 on a pass from freshman defenseman
Zach White (Taberg, N.Y.). It was White's first collegiate point.
In addition to White earning his first point, freshman
Mac McAvoy (Port Colborne, Ont.) assisted on the goal by Moles for his first point as a Blue Devil. Two other freshmen,
Hunter Long (Lebanon, Tenn.) and
Marcus Ortiz (Richardson, Texas) also had assists.
The Blue Devils were unable to withstand Buffalo State's final surge. Rossi's goal with just over five minutes left gave the Bengals new energy. Avery's goal – a deflection in front of Eiserman – completed the Buffalo State comeback with :58 left as the Bengals skated with an extra attacker.
A trip to Michigan for two games is next in store for the Blue Devils – Nov. 30 at Adrian, and Dec. 1 against USA Hockey's Under-18 Team at Ann Arbor.
