Devils rack up the shots in 4-2 loss at Cortland

BOXSCORE CORTLAND, N.Y. – Fredonia State fell to Cortland, 4-2, Saturday despite taking 58 shots in their SUNYAC men's hockey game.

His team down 3-1 with 2:56 left, Blue Devil sophomore forward John DeFeo (Glen Head, N.Y.) made it a one-goal deficit with his first goal of the season. The Red Dragons' Mike Henrici scored into an empty net with :27 left, his second goal of the game, both in the third period.

Junior forward Stephen Castriota (Bellport, N.Y.) scored the other Blue Devil goal while freshman goaltender Christopher Eiserman (Newburyport, Mass.) made 18 saves.

Cortland goaltender Lyle Rocker made 56 saves and the Red Dragons were 3 of 4 on the penalty kill.

Cortland scored on its first shot of the game, an even-strength goal by Brant Sherwood :42 seconds into the opening period. The Blue Devils countered with Castriota's goal, his first of the season, on a power play at 14:31. The Red Dragons regained a 2-1 lead on a goal by A.J. Moyer with 1:22 left in the first period.

The Blue Devils had a 32-18 advantage in shots through a scoreless second period. They outshot the Red Dragons 26-4 in the third period, yet managed only DeFeo's goal – assisted by freshman forward Frankie Hart (Timmins, Ont.).

Fredonia State plays its home opener Friday against SUNY Canton, with Steele Hall doors opening one hour before the scheduled 7 p.m. opening faceoff.

ASSISTS ADDED: Two additions were made to the scoring in the Blue Devils' 3-2 overtime win Friday at Oswego.  Junior forward Brian Doust (Calgary, Alberta) was credited with an assist on the Blue Devils' tying goal late in the third period. An assist to senior forward Alex Perkins (St. Albert, Alberta) was added to the game-winning goal.
