BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State took its first step toward getting back in the SUNYAC playoff picture with a 3-0 women's soccer home win Friday over the Potsdam Bears.
Freshman forward
Jordyn Ruston (Walworth), freshman midfielder
Kristie Kleine (Cazenovia), and senior midfielder
Maria Green (Loudonville) scored for the Blue Devils, who moved to 1-4-1 in the conference, two points behind the Bears with Plattsburgh coming to University Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday. The Cardinals and Geneseo entered play Friday tied for the sixth and final playoff spot, while the Blue Devils were six points back.
The Blue Devils are 3-9-2 overall while the Bears fell to 5-8-1 overall and 2-4-0 in SUNYAC.
Freshman goalkeeper
Hannah McGlinchey (Babylon) made four saves to earn the shutout, her second of the season. Her diving stop of a shot by Alexis Beach midway through the second half represented Potsdam's best scoring chance of the game. Beach went in alone following a Fredonia State turnover.
Ruston opened the scoring in the eighth minute on a header following a short cross into the box by junior defender
Maggie Horan (Livonia). It was Ruston's second goal of the season.
Kleine added to her team-leading goal total -- she has six -- to put the Blue Devils on top 2-0 in the 54th minute. Senior midfielder
Catie Hale (Lockport) slid the ball from the right wing into the box and Kleine left-footed the ball into the open side.
Green connected for her first goal of the season -- her fourth as a collegian -- when she one-timed a hard, high shot into the upper left corner directly off a Potsdam turnover. It came in the 60th minute.
