MORRISVILLE, N.Y. -- A back and forth battle between Fredonia State and Morrisville finally ended with the Mustangs scoring a pair of late goals -- the second an empty netter -- to claim a 5-3 victory on Saturday evening.
Each team traded single goals in the first, second, and third periods before Morrisville's Michael Markowitz struck the game winner with 1:35 left on the clock to put the Mustangs up 4-3.
A minute later, Morrisville would use an empty netter to give the 5-3 final.
The Devils fell to 3-7-1 in SUNYAC play and 5-13-2 overall. Morrisville moved to 4-8-0 and 4-15-2 overall.
Fredonia State opened the scoring on a power play goal by
Jared Wynia -- his fifth goal of the season -- 4:37 into the game.
Tyler Sheppard and
Taylor Bourne assisted.
Morrisville responded at the 14:11 mark to tie the game at 1-1.
Fredonia struck first early in the second period on
Chris Jung's second goal of the season.
Brett Mueller assisted. Morrisville used a power play to tie the game at the 17:44 mark.
At the 6:41 mark of the third period, the Devils went up 3-2 on their second power play score, when
Stephen Castriota connected for his third goal of the season. Bourne was credited with his second assist of the game.
Morrisville tied the game on an even strength goal midway through the period. They tacked on the two late scores to claim the win.
Fredonia State's
Mark Friesen made 42 saves and surrendered four scores. Christpher Azzano made 24 saves and allowed three goals for the Mustangs.
Morrisville held a 47-27 edge in shots on goal. The Devils converted on two of five power play opportunities compared to Morrisville netting one goal in four chances.
The Devils are back in Steele Hall next weekend to take on Potsdam and Plattsburgh.
