Lyles nets OT-game winner in final seconds

BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Down one point and coming out of a time out with six seconds to go in overtime, freshman Robert Lyles (Peekskill) drove the length of the court and converted a layup to lead the Fredonia State men's basketball team to an 87-86 victory over Potsdam on Friday.

Potsdam sent the game into overtime on a Joe Estramonte three pointer with five seconds left in regulation, making it 79-all.

The Devils were led by senior Amir Billups (Buffalo/Starpoint) with 22 points and six rebounds. Junior Tyrone Clark (Elmira/Elmira Free) added 19 points and a team-high eight assists. Senior Dalton Kashmer (South Dayton/Pine Valley) had 15 points and freshman Eric Zwierlein (Nichols, N.Y./Tioga) had 13.

The Devils improved to 6-10 overall and 2-8 in conference play.

Potsdam (7-10, 3-7) was led by Curtis Pierce with 21 points, 15 rebounds and five assists. Pierce collected five points in the overtime period. Josh Lambert added 18 .

The Devils took a 37-30 lead into halftime. Potsdam opened the second half with an 8-0 run to take one-point lead.

The Devils began to pull away midway through the second period. Up 51-50, the Devils ran off 12 straight points, 10 coming from Billups, to go up 63-50. Up until that point, there had been 11 lead changes and three ties.

Potsdam slowly clawed back into the game. They pulled within one point, 69-68, following a pair of Colin Peterson free throws with 3:31 left to play.

The Devils would maintain the lead until the final seconds of regulation when Estramonte nailed his clutch three pointer.

The Devils tied a season high with 11 three pointers. They had converted 11 earlier in the week at Geneseo. Billups accounted for five of the long-range buckets.

Fredonia State held the rebounding advantage, 35-32. They shot 14 of 19 from the free throw line (74 percent) compared to Potsdam's 20 of 32 (63 percent)

The Devils are back in action Saturday vs. Plattsburgh. The men tip off at 4 p.m.
