Neumann blanks Blue Devils

ASTON, Pa. -- The first of two games of Fredonia State's weekend pair at Neumann ended in favor of the host Knights, 5-0.

The Blue Devils (5-10-1) allowed two quick goals in the first period and a goal late in the second period to trail 3-0. The Blue Devils had a good scoring opportunity on a power play early in the third period, yet failed to take advantage before giving up two more goals.

For the Knights (8-4-2), Steve Gervais and Aaron Keaney scored two minutes apart midway through the first period. Keaney's goal came on the power-play as did Neumann's third goal, at 18:14 of the second period, by Jordan Zalba.

After being outshot in the first period, the Blue Devils went on the offensive the rest of the way and finished with a 33-29 advantage in shots. On a power-play of their own early in the third period, the Blue Devils took six shots yet were unable to break through.

The Knights added to their lead, 4-0, on a goal by Chris Bournazos at 8:11 of the third period. Sean Crozier completed the scoring with 3:11 remaining.

Ian Ellenberger hit a post early in the first period to keep the Blue Devils off the board. Stephen Castriota hit a post in the third period.

Neumann goaltender Ben Curley made all 33 saves to earn his first shutout of the season.

Mark Friesen stopped 24 shots for the Blue Devils.

The rematch between the teams is 3 p.m. Saturday.
