FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Nationally ranked Cortland rolled over Fredonia State, 12-1 and 6-1, in a SUNYAC doubleheader Friday at Blue Devil Field.
The Red Dragons, ranked No. 19 in the latest NCAA Division III poll, scored in four of the five innings of the first game, which was halted due to the mercy rule.
Meaghan Kohler hit two homers and had five RBI in the nightcap as the Red Dragons improved 20-4 overall and 6-0 in the SUNYAC.
The Blue Devils collected three hits -- singles by
Anne Wasik (Fredonia),
Lauren Larson (Lakewood), and
Gabrielle Ciccarello (Sodus) -- in the first game.
In game two, the Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Ciccarello worked a lead-off walk, advanced to second on an infield groundout, went to third on a single by
Brittany Lis (Lancaster), and scored on a wild pitch.
Kohler put the Red Dragons on top 2-1 with a two-run homer in the fourth inning after a long battle with losing pitcher
Danielle Shelp (Pittsford).
With her team up 3-1 in the seventh, Kohler smashed a three-run homer to put the game out of reach.
Lis finished with two hits in the second game while
Tina Schwartzmeyer (West Seneca) had a triple.
The Blue Devils fell to 9-10-1 overall and 1-5 in the SUNYAC. They close out the home portion of their season with a doubleheader against Oswego starting at noon.
