BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Fredonia State's bid to make the SUNYAC softball tournament will come down to its final day of the regular season following a road split Friday at Brockport.

The Blue Devils won the opener, 8-4, behind the six-hit pitching of Alyssa Brognano (New Paltz) and a six-run inning. Brockport used the long ball to rebound in the nightcap, 12-7.

The split left the Blue Devils with a 7-9 conference record heading into a doubleheader Saturday at Geneseo starting at noon. They might need to win both games to qualify for the eight-team tournament next weekend at Cortland. They are 16-14-1 overall.

The Golden Eagles improved to 24-12 with an 8-8 SUNYAC mark.

The Blue Devils bunched together three of their eight hits during the fourth inning of the opener. They scored six runs and relied on Brognano to hold Brockport the rest of the way. She finished with three strikeouts and only two of the runs she allowed were earned.

Katie Bartkowiak (Fredonia) led the offensive attack with three singles and two RBI, while Hannah Vesneske (Hamburg) had a double, a single, and two RBI. Lauren Larson (Lakewood) and Jessica Lauck (Kenmore) had one RBI each.

The second game started on a high note for the Blue Devils. Michelle Lattner (Cheektowaga) had a two-out RBI single and Brittany Lis (Lancaster) followed with a three-run homer to stake her team to a 4-0 lead.

Brockport jumped right back into the game with three runs in the last of the first off Blue Devil starter Ashley LaPorta (Buffalo). The Golden Eagles pulled even on a solo homer by Emily Dumas in the third inning, then chased LaPorta with five runs in the fourth. Dumas hit her second homer in as many innings, this one coming off reliever Danielle Shelp (Pittsford).

The Blue Devils answered with three runs in the top of the fifth, an inning which included consecutive doubles by Tina Schwartzmeyer (West Seneca), Bartkowiak, and Vesneske. Yet Brockport got all three runs back in the sixth inning, including a two-run homer by Amy Nowak.
