Devils extend No. 2 Cortland to final seconds

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State extended nationally ranked Cortland to the final seconds before falling 8-7 Saturday before at large crowd at University Stadium.

Blue Devil senior Amy Simon (Amherst) beat a double-team to get a shot off in the final seconds, which was stopped by Cortland goalkeeper Shauna Hutchinson.

The Blue Devils regained possession at the opposite end of the field but had no time to mount one more scoring threat.

Katie Klene (Cazenovia) had five of Fredonia State's seven goals. Simon and Morgan McNamara (Oswego) had one game each. Simon also had four draw controls.

Maria DiFato had four goals, Maria Abbott three goals, and Taylor Robinson one goal for the Red Dragons.

Casey Chiesa (Baldwinsville) made 13 saves in net for the Blue Devils, while Megan Mietelski (Fairport) was a defensive standout.

The Blue Devils fell to 12-3 overall and 6-1 in the SUNYAC while the Red Dragons, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III, improved to 13-1 overall and 6-0 in the conference.
