BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Fredonia State bounced back from a shutout loss with a 10-1 win over Buffalo State in the second game of a SUNYAC softball doubleheader.
After falling 4-0 in the first game, the Blue Devils scored three runs in the first inning of the second game and never looked back. They improved to 15-13-1 overall and 6-8 in the SUNYAC.
A double by
Anne Wasik (Fredonia), two hit batters, two wild pitches, and an RBI single by
Brittany Lis (Lancaster) wrested the momentum away from the Bengals, who used a pair of two-run innings and the six-hit pitching of Aleesha Williams to win the first game.
Williams made two relief appearances in the second game. She returned to the circle with two outs in the first, left for a spell, yet returned to finish up. Meanwhile,
Jennifer Tighe (Hamburg) started for the Blue Devils. Battling cold and steady rain, she left in the second inning with her pitching hand began to cramp.
Ashley LaPorta (Buffalo) took over and pitched the remaining 3 1/3 innings of the game, which was halted by virtue of the mercy rule after five innings. LaPorta walked three, struck out three, gave up three hits, and hit a batter, but made clutch pitchers when needed. She improved to 4-3.
Fredonia State's top hitter on the day was freshman
Erika Hines (Falconer). She had two singles in the first game and a double, two singles, and one RBI in game two. She finished 5 for 6 on the day.
Katie Bartkowiak (Fredonia) and
Lauren Larson (Lakewood) each had two hits in the opener and one hit and two runs scored in the nightcap.
Tina Schwartzmeyer (West Seneca) also scored two runs and Lis had two RBI.
The Blue Devils have one weekend of SUNYAC games left in the regular season, next Friday at Brockport and next Saturday at Geneseo.
