Pitching shines in SUNYAC sweep at New Paltz

 – Fredonia State's starting pitchers allowed no runs in a doubleheader sweep of New Paltz, 3-0 and 4-1, in SUNYAC baseball Saturday.

Sean Larson (Angola) pitched a complete-game three-hitter in the first game and Steve Sturm (Amherst) followed with seven shutout innings in the nightcap.

The Blue Devils (11-20, 5-10 SUNYAC) scored single runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings. Dillon Lowe (Pittsford) had two hits, a sacrifice bunt, scored two runs, and stole two baes while Chris Messina (Dunkirk) had two singles and one RBI.

Larson had seven strikeouts and walked two over the seven-inning stint. He improved to 2-4 this season and lowered his team-leading earned run average to 2.97.

Sturm kept the scoreless-inning streak going in the second game. He yielded four hits, walked one, and struck out five over his seven-inning outing. Thomas Morris (Syosset) worked the final two innings.

The Blue Devils got the most out of their six hits, all singles. Dan Fetes (Webster) led the attack with two hits, two RBI, and one run scored. Lowe and Brian Sheehan (West Seneca) had one RBI each while Ian Gallagher (Pittsford) scored two runs and stole two bases.

Sturm improved to 2-1 this spring. His ERA of 3.38 is second on the team.

New Paltz dropped to 18-17 overall, 5-10 in the SUNYAC with the two losses. They pounded out 17 hits in a 13-5 win Friday over the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils are back in action Tuesday at D'Youville. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
