ONEONTA, N.Y. -- ONEONTA, N.Y. – Fredonia State split a SUNYAC doubleheader Friday with Oneonta.
The Red Dragons scored broke open a tied game with four runs in the fifth inning en route an 8-5 win in the first game. The Blue Devils bounced back for a 6-2 win in the nightcap.
The Blue Devils ended the day with a 12-12-1 record. They are 3-7 in the SUNYAC.
In the opener, singles by
Gabrielle Ciccarello (Sodus) and
Brittany Lis (Lancaster) preceded a sacrifice fly by
Anne Wasik (Fredonia) to stake the Blue Devils to a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Devils fell behind 4-1 before rallying for three runs in the fourth. Lis and
Rachel Burrows (Olean) had singles, Lis an RBI double, and
Katie Bartkowiak (Fredonia) an RBI single.
The Blue Devils scored their final run in the seventh inning. With one out,
Lauren Larson (Lakewood) singled and
Michelle Lattner (Cheektowaga) smashed an RBI double into the right-field corner.
Raela Wiley (Wilson) was the losing pitcher, her first setback in two seasons at Fredonia State. She's 2-1 this season, 7-1 the past two years.
The Blue Devils jumped into a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the second game. Oneonta tied the game with two in the fifth before Fredonia State scored four runs in the final two innings.
Alyssa Brognano (New Paltz) earned the win in relief of
Jennifer Tighe (Hamburg). Brognano worked three scoreless inni ngs with three strikeouts and one walk after Tighe went four solid innings as the starter after finishing up the first game.
Wasik singled, Bartkowiak was hit by a pitch, and Larson rapped a two-run double to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead in the third inning. The Red Dragons scored both their runs in the fifth.
The Blue Devils regained the lead in the sixth on a single by Lattner, one of her three hits, a single by Ciccarello, and a two-out, two-strike single by Jessica Lauck (Kenmore).
The Blue Devils added three runs in the seventh. A double by Wasik, a sacrifice by
Tina Schwartzmeyer (West Seneca), and a single by Bartkowiak plated the first run. Lattner and
Erika Hines (Falconer) completed the scoring with RBI doubles. Hines's ball hit halfway up the center-field fence off the 225-foot sign.
The Blue Devils travel to New Paltz for a noon SUNYAC doubleheader Saturday.
