BOXSCORE

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Oneonta scored three runs in the top of the ninth to defeat Fredonia State, 6-3, and salvage the final game of the three-game SUNYAC weekend series at Ludwig Field.

With the score tied at 3-3, the Red Dragons loaded the bases off losing Kyle Grey (Frewsburg) on singles by Ivan Plata, Tory Bouyea, and Kevin Knack.

Zachary Jordon relieved Grey and induced an infield groundout for the first out of the inning. Oneonta's Matt Salvatore then lined to left. The ball was dropped and Plata raced home with the go-ahead run.

Zachary Levanduski then dropped an RBI single into right and Eric Wells lofted a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.

Jarred Bronley picked up the win in relief after Oneonta starter Steve Ascher turned in a strong outing.

Bronley recorded the final out of the eighth with the bases loaded. He worked out of second-and-third jam in the ninth.

The Red Dragons improved to 7-6 overall and 1-2 in the SUNYAC. The Blue Devils fell to 7-10 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

The Blue Devils trailed 3-0 before breaking through in the last of the eighth off Ascher. Singles by pinch-hitter Chris Messina (Dunkirk) and Connor Lorenzo (Rochester) and a hit-batsmen loaded the bases with one out.

Oneonta head coach Benjamin Grimm removed Ascher and replaced him with Jim Hegmann, who walked Brian Sheehan (West Seneca) to force in the first Blue Devil run.

Dan Greco (Lockport) then lined a single up the middle. Oneonta second baseman Plata made a diving attempt but the ball was just out of his reach and two runs scored. Bronley then pitched out of further trouble.

The Blue Devils strung together consecutive hits in the seventh, singles by Sheehan and Greco, yet Ascher pitched out of the jam. He then yielded back-to-back singles to start the eighth and left the game with the bases loaded and one out, yet still in line to pick up the win.

Angelo Sciandra (Tonawanda) started on the mound for the Blue Devils. He was lifted after the first inning and replaced by Zachary Hugg (Waverly), who worked the next five innings in long relief. He pitched out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in his first inning of work.

Hugg yielded the first two Oneonta runs.

The Red Dragons took their first lead of the series in the fourth inning. With two outs, Matt Mastroianni grounded an RBI single to left following singles by Matt Salvatore and Levanduski.

Hugg's defense bailed him out in the fifth. A lead-off bloop single by Kevin Knack was erased when he was caught stealing, Sheehan to shortstop John Bennett (Churchville).

The play loomed even larger after Plata singled to center with two outs. Nate Jones flew deep to left and Blue Devil left fielder Sean Urckfitz (Penfield) made a diving over-the-shoulder catch on the warning track to end the inning.

The Red Dragons took a 2-0 lead with an unearned run in the sixth. Singles by Levanduski and Eric Wells and a throwing error put runners on first and third. Levanduski  scored on an infield groundout by Mastroianni.

Thomas Morris (Syosset) pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Blue Devils.

Grey allowed an unearned in the eighth on a single by Wells, a single by Mastroianni, and a throwing error which allowed Wells to come home.
