BOXSCORE BOXSCORE
ERIE, Pa. -- Fredonia State dropped its first game since returning from Florida, a 9-1 loss Thursday afternoon at Penn State Behrend.
The Blue Devils were hitless until their second time through the order. Singles by
Brian Sheehan (West Seneca) and
Ian Gallagher (Pittsford) in the fifth inning resulted in a scoring threat which failed to result in a run.
The Blue Devils scored their lone run in the eighth inning. Connor Lorenzo (Rochester) cracked a one-out double,
Chris Messina (Dunkirk) followed with a pinch-hit single, and
Dan Fetes (Webster) lofted a sacrifice fly.
The inning might have been larger had Gallagher not been thrown out at second trying to stretch a lead-off single into a two-bagger.
Kyle Grey (Frewsburg) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Blue Devils. He worked the first three innings.
Zachary Hugg (Waverly) pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, while
Steve Sturm (Amherst) and
Thomas Morris (Syosset) pitched one scoreless inning each.
The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 5-9 while Behrend improved to 9-6.
The Blue Devils open the home portion of their season Saturday with a SUNYAC doubleheader vs. the Oneonta Red Dragons beginning at noon.
The same two teams also play a single game at noon Saturday on Ludwig Field.
