Devils drop pair on getaway day

MINNEOLA, Fla. – Fredonia State closed out its Florida trip with a pair of losses Friday at the Grassy Lake complex.

The Blue Devils returned home with a 6-4 record following losses to Minot State, 14-2, and St. Scholaistica, 4-3.

The Blue Devils jumped to a 2-0 first-inning lead against Minot State on singles by Anne Wasik (Fredonia) and Tina Schwartzmeyer (West Seneca), followed by a bases-clearing triple by Lauren Larson (Lakewood).

Minot State, an NAIA Division II team, took a 3-2 lead in the second. The eventual winners broke the game open with eight runs in the sixth inning.

Schwartzmeyer and Michelle Lattner (Cheektowaga) had two hits each for the Blue Devils. One of Lattner's hits was a double.

In the second game, St. Scholastica's Theresa Tauer broke a 3-3 tie with a lead-off homer in the last of the sixth off Alyssa Brognano (New Paltz). The Blue Devils put a runner on but could not score in the top of the seventh.

Wasik continued her torrid hitting with a single to start the game and a two-run homer go put the Blue Devils ahead 3-0 in the third They broke on top 1-0 in the first inning on a single by Katie Bartkowiak (Fredonia) and a double by Lattner.

The Saints tied the game with three runs in the third inning off Brognano, who finished with a six-hitter.

St. Scholastica turned two double plays, including a rally killer on the fourth inning after back-to-back singles by Jessica Lauck (Kenmore) and Jamie Atkins (East Amherst).

The Blue Devils flew home Friday to begin preparations for the northern portion of their schedule. They are back in action March 28 when Allegheny visits for a doubleheader.
