Devils drop rubber match to P-burgh, 8-7

BOXSCORE FORT MYERS, FLA. -- The Fredonia State baseball team dropped an 8-7 game to Plattsburgh in the Gene Cusic Classic. The two teams split a doubleheader the day before.

Down 8-6 in the bottom of the ninth, the Devils mounted a final rally. After battling in an eight-pitch at bat, Dan Fetes struck out on a ball in the dirt. The ball got by the catcher and Fetes reached first.

Dillon Lowe followed with an 0-2 single.

Brian Sheehan -- who had already three hits -- then lined to center field for the first out. John Bennett then grounded to third. Plattsburgh's David Tyler stepped on the bag for the second out, then bounced the throw to first for an error. Lowe came around to score, and Bennett advanced to second. Plattsburgh's Mike Doughtie then struck out Justin Burns to end the game.

The Devils took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Jake Nowak and Dan Fetes ripped back to back singles. After a double steal, Sheehan grounded the ball to short and reached on an error, scoring two runs.

Plattsburgh then took the lead in the top of the second, using five hits to gather four runs.

They tacked on two more in the third following a leadoff walk and an error. The runners moved up on a wild pitch. A groundball to second scored the first run. Fredonia State starting pitcher Josh Gascon was then pulled. Freshman Zach Jordon came in and struck out the first batter before yielding a run-scoring single to make it 6-2, Plattsburgh.

The Devils scored two in the bottom of the third. Conner Lorenzo led off with a single, and Jake Nowak walked. After back-to-back strikeouts, Sheehan singled to score a run. Bennett grounded to short for an error plating the second run to make it a 6-4 game.

The Devils tied it 6-all in the fifth. Nowak and Fetes singled and were bunted up one base. Sheehan then roped a double to score both.

Plattsburgh would score two in the seventh that would prove to be the difference. After a  leadoff hit by pitch, Plattsburgh's Ryan Shaugnessy then bunted to deep short with the ball landing on the outfield grass to set up first and second. A dropped fly ball then loaded the bases. After a line out, a pair of singles plated two runs to make it 8-6 Plattsburgh before a double play ended the inning.

Sheehan finished the game with three hits and three RBI. Nowak had a pair of hits and three runs, while Fetes had two hits and two runs. Both teams had 11 hits. Plattsburgh committed six errors defensively.

Jordon tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and one earned run while walking none. Gascon took the loss for the Devils allowing six runs in 2 1/3 innings of work.

Fredonia State moves to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Plattsburgh is now 5-6 and 2-1 in SUNYAC play.
