CLERMONT, Fla. -- Fredonia State defeated University of Rochester, 4-2, before they fell to Heidelberg, 7-0, in a season-opening doubleheader Saturday at the National Training Center.
Michelle Lattner (Cheektowaga) had three hits, including a two-run double, to support the pitching of
Alyssa Brognano (New Paltz) and
Ashley LaPorta (Buffalo) against regional opponent Rochester.
Anne Wasik (Fredonia) doubled with one out in the first,
Katie Bartkowiak (Fredonia) singled, her first of two hits, before Lattner delivered a two-out double into the opposite-field corner.
The Blue Devils added to their lead with one run in the fifth and one run in the seventh. In the fifth,
Tina Schwartzmeyer (West Seneca) singled ahead of an opposite-field single by
Lauren Larson (Lakewood), her second hit of the game. In the seventh,
Jamie Atkins (East Amherst) reached on a two-out error. Pinch-runner
Danielle Shelp (Pittsford) eventually scored on a single to center by
Brittany Lis (Lancaster), also her second hit of the game.
Brognano pitched the first six innings, striking out three, and yielding one earned run. LaPorta pitched a scoreless inning to pick up the save.
In the second game, the Blue Devil bats slumbered. They had only five hits, two by
Rachel Burrows (Olean), and a second double by Wasik.
Jennifer Tighe (Hamburg) was the losing pitcher. Shelp and Raela Wiley (Wilson) pitched in relief.
The Blue Devils play twice more Sunday -- at 5 p.m. vs. Rutgers-Newark and 7 p.m. vs. Brandeis.
