Blue Devils turn aside Potsdam

BOXSCORE POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Becky Hebert (Hilton) scored 19 points and Jaimie Warren (Lakeview) had her sixth double-double of the season to lead Fredonia State over Potsdam, 54-42, in SUNYAC women's basketball.

The Blue Devils never trailed in the game and improved to 9-9 overall and 5-7 in the conference. The Bears fell to 4-16 and 2-11.

Hebert connected on 6 of 17 shots from the field and 5 of 5 from the line. The Blue Devils made 13 of 16 free throws overall.

Hebert added 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Liz Wierbinski (Camillus) had 13 points and blocked four shots.

Jessica Kouzan led the Bears with 12 points.

Fredonia State visits Plattsburgh for a 2 p.m. Saturday tipoff.

Fredonia State closed out the first half Friday with an 8-0 lead to take a 30-21 halftime lead. Warren knocked down a pair of free throws, followed by baskets by Hebert, Wierbinski, and Warren. Anna Riley (Massena) had an assist and a defensive rebound, Wierbinski a blocked shot, and Hebert had a defensive rebound during the run.

The Blue Devils pushed their lead out to 12 points on a three-point basket by Nicole Calbi (Olean) early in the second half. They took their largest lead, 40-26, on a basket by Wierbinski with 15:25 left.

Potsdam trimmed its deficit to three points on a basket by Katy Briedis with 7:05 to go.

The Blue Devils turned up the defense and held the Bears without a field goal over the final 4:33.
