Andrew Christ and
Ben Waldman scored 20 seconds apart midway through the third period to carry Fredonia State over Geneseo, 4-1, in a SUNYAC first-round game Wednesday.
Christ added an empty-net short-handed goal in the final minute while
Brian Doust had a first-period goal for the Blue Devils, who improved to 12-10-3 and advanced to a semifinal meeting at top-seeded and nationally No. 1 ranked Oswego at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Buffalo State travels to Plattsburgh in the other SUNYAC semifinal.
The Blue Devils outshot the Ice Knights, 30-21. Fredonia State goaltender
Mark Friesen made 20 saves.
The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a power-play goal by Doust, who one-timed a pass from
Bryan Ross. It was the first of two assists by Ross and gave him 134 career points, fifth-best in Fredonia State history.
A bad-angle shot led to Geneseo goal. The puck laid in front of the net after Friesen went down for the initial save. Geneseo's David Arduin lifted the puck into the net for the only goal of the second period.
The Blue Devils killed off a five-minute penalty late in the second period which ran over into the third period. They also killed off a penalty late in the game, during which Geneseo pulled goaltender Cory Gershon in favor of an extra attacker.
Gershon returned to the net after Christ's empty-netter. The Geneseo goaltender finished with 26 saves.
