FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State took command with two goals in a span of just over two minutes en route to a 3-1 SUNYAC women's soccer victory over the Oswego State Lakers.
Katie Kleine (Cazenovia) and
Kristi Putzig (Williamsville) had one goal and one assist each. In addition,
Laura Lukowski (Orchard Park) scored a goal, her first as a collegian.
The Blue Devils played without senior goalkeeper
Meaghan Meszaros (Selden) and sophomore midfielder
Maggie Horan (Livonia) was inserted in her place. Horan was credited with five saves in her first appearance as a goalkeeper for the Blue Devils.
Horan's shutout bid lasted until 1:52 remained. Nikki Liadka turned from just in front of the goal and blasted a shot just under the crossbar. It was the seventh goal of the season for the Oswego State junior.
Oswego State goalkeeper Emily Varonier made three saves.
The Blue Devils improved to 8-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the SUNYAC. The loss dropped the Lakers to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
The Blue Devils are back in SUNYAC action Saturday afternoon when they entertain the Cortland Red Dragons at University Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Putzig had a part in both goals in the first-half, played in a steady rain.
First she forced an Oswego turnover and slid a short cross to Kleine, whose low shot found the net for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. It came at 37:58.
Putzig made it 2-0 at 40:09 with her third goal of the season, an unassisted tally on a shot from the top of the 18-yard line.
Lukowski, a sophomore, scored on a short chip shot after a Blue Devil corner kick. Oswego attempted to clear the ball but the Blue Devils kept volleying it back into the box, with Kleine making next-to-last touch and earning the assist at 68:40.
