FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State will play host to SUNYAC championship, post-season, and regular-season events this weekend.
In addition, the campus will see the end of one regular season and the beginning of another.
The championship event will take place Saturday at Lake Erie State Park in Portland – the SUNYAC men's and women's cross country meets. The men's 8,000-meter race goes off at 11 a.m., the women's 6,000-meter race at noon. All 10 SUNYAC schools will be represented.
"It should be a very exciting race for both programs," Blue Devil head coach
Tom Wilson said. "This will be a very tough test, both mentally and physically, for my men and women."
The post-season event is a first-round SUNYAC Tournament women's soccer game between the Blue Devils and the New Paltz Hawks at 1 p.m. on the University Stadium grass field. It's the second straight postseason the two teams have met, and the second straight weekend. The Hawks were 1-0 winners in the 2011 SUNYAC semifinals. The Blue Devils defeated the Hawks 3-2 last Saturday in a regular-season game at Fredonia.
"It should be a good close competitive game on Saturday," women's soccer head coach
Chris Case said. "Both teams have had good seaons so far. Lately we have been playing well and hope to keep that going as we enter the playoffs."
Ticket prices -- set by the SUNYAC -- $3 for children under 12 and $6 for all other children and adults. College students with a valid ID card will be admitted free of charge.
Regular-season play in SUNYAC hockey begins this weekend. Fredonia State, 1-1 after a pair of non-conference games last weekend, play host to Geneseo at 7 p.m. Friday and Brockport at 7 p.m. Saturday inside the Steele Hall Ice Arena. Doors open at 6 o'clock each night.
"We are billing this as a playoff game on Friday night against Geneseo," men's hockey head coach
Jeff Meredith said. "The SUNYAC is brutally competitive and we have to get off to a great start. We would expect a one-goal game as are most of the conference games."
In non-conference home events Saturday:
The women's volleyball team closes out its regular season with matches against Ithaca at 11 a.m. and Hiram at 3 p.m. It's the final tune-up before the SUNYAC Tournament next Friday at Buffalo State. It is also the final home match for the lone senior on the team, outside hitter
Lindsey Olson (Portville). She will be recognized during a ceremony prior to the 3 p.m. match.
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams open their season at 1 p.m. against Rochester Institute of Technology at the Steele Hall Natatorium. It is the first of nine home dates, including the three-day Blue Devil Invitational Nov. 30, Dec. 1, and Dec. 2.
