BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. –
Tyler Williams scored off a long crossing pass with 1:07 left to left Fredonia State over Westminster, Pa., 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer at University Stadium.
Williams, a junior midfielder, was deep down the left side when senior
Matt Grabowski slid a pass through the box from the right side. Westminster goalkeeper Adam Kephart was unable to get across the goalmouth to stop the blast by Williams.
It was the sixth goal of the season for Williams, his third game-winner.
The victory lifted the Blue Devils to 7-4-0. The Titans fell to 2-7-0.
Westminster grabbed a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick by Coty Hainsey in the 24
th minute. Hainsey's first goal of the season came off senior goalkeeper
Bobby McGinnis, who made two saves in the first half.
McGinnis was replaced by freshman
A.J. Grecco at the start of the second half. Grecco was very soon the recipient of good forture when Hainsey banged a close-range shot off the left post.
The Blue Devils knotted the game, 1-1, in the 60
th minute. After sophomore Jake Persons muscled the ball up the left side, senior
Cory Paine delivered from inside the 18-yard line in the 60
th minute.
It was Paine's first goal of the year. Persons was credited with an assist.
The next-best scoring chance was by Fredonia State junior
Brian Courtney, a hard shot from the left wing that Kephart knocked away. Kephart also stopped a dangerous ball by Blue Devil sophomore
Chase Lipshie in the 78
th minute.
Kephart finished with five saves while Grecco had no saves but earned the win . Corner kicks were 7-5, Fredonia State's advantage.
The Blue Devils return to SUNYAC action 4 p.m. Saturday at Buffalo State.
