BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A defensive mistake led to the only goal in Geneseo's 1-0 SUNYAC win over Fredonia State during a rainstorm Friday at University Stadium.
Geneseo's Anne Beinetti (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) dribbled across the top of the 18-yard line and drew two defenders to her. Beinetti momentarily lost possession but regained the ball when the defenders collided. She chipped a shot into the lower right corner at the 3:20 mark.
The Blue Knights, ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Division III East Region, improved to 7-1 and 1-0 in the SUNYAC. The Blue Devils fell to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The Blue Knights had another great scoring chance midway through the first half. Fredonia State goalkeeper
Meaghan Meszaros (Selden, N.Y.) stopped a short blast. A second Geneseo shot toward an now-vacated net banged off the left post and out of harms' way..
Although outshot 19-14 in the game, the Blue Devils pressed up and had a couple good scoring chances late in the second half. First,
Reilly Condidorio (LeRoy, N.Y.) fired into the box from a far left angle but Geneseo's Julia Sanger (Penfield, N.Y.) come off her line to club the ball out of the box. A short while later,
Kristi Putzig (Williamsville, N.Y.) lofted in a long shot from 30 yards out. Sanger timed her jump and batted the ball on its descent. The ball hit the cross bar and eventually went out of bounds.
Sanger was credited with five saves while earning her second shutout of the season. Meszaros had five saves in the first 37 minutes. Her replacement,
Kayleigh Forger (Rochester, N.Y.), stopped six shots in the final 53:13.
Both teams are back in action Saturday -- Geneseo at Buffalo State, and the Blue Devils at home vs. Brockport. Game time at University Stadium is 1 p.m.
