BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. --- Ryan Smith (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) scored 20 seconds into overtime Saturday as Fredonia State defeated Houghton, 3-2, and claimed the 2011 Clarion Classion men's soccer championship.

Smith took a pass from Luke Tylutki (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon) and scored on shot from just inside the 18-yard line. Jake Persons (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) also earned an assist.

It was the third goal of the game for Smith, which earned him a place on the all-tournament team. His teammate, Rejean Archambeault (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads), was named tournament most valuable player.

Smith opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a shot on net off a Blue Devil corner kick. The Highlanders netted the equalizer in the 42nd minute on a header by Michael Dix (Largrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) following a Fredonia State foul deep in its own end.

The Highlanders took a 2-1 lead at 50:52 on a own goal. What started as a throw-in into the box ended up as a Houghton goal when the ball was accidently headed into the net.

Smith scored the equalizer at 60:59 when he chipped a shot over the goalkeeper following a long through pass from Grabowski.

Both teams took 15 shots, and each had seven on net. Fredonia State's Bobby McGinnis (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira Free Academy) was credited with five saves. Steve Zacchinga (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora)  made four saves in the Houghton net.

In Buffalo State's 1-0 win over SUNYIT earlier in the day, the Bengals (3-0-1) scored a goal by Kirk Love (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) at 34:19. Love broke through on the SUNYIT goalkeeper Malick Faye (Bronx, N.Y./Martin Luther King) after receiving a short pass from Tony Schiappa (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East), who was credited with an assist.

Faye and Buffalo State's Ben Spilman (Queensbury, N.Y./Glens Falls) made six saves each. The loss dropped SUNYIT to 0-3-1.
