Blue Devils unable to hold off Geneseo

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State jumped to an early lead but was unable to hold it and fell Tuesday to Geneseo, 11-9, in SUNYAC action.

The Blue Devils (8-2, 1-1 SUNYAC) scored the first seven goals of the game, only to have the Blue Knights (5-0, 1-0 SUNYAC) battle back to forge an 8-8 tie on a goal by Anna Hutchings with four seconds left in the first half.

Caroline Buonocore put Geneseo on top for good with her second goal of the game 3:27 into the second half. Emily Haggerty pushed the margin out to twio goals before Amy Simon scored the lone Blue Devil goal of the second half. It came at 21:48 and cut the Geneseo lead to 10-9.

The Blue Devils then either were stopped or turned the ball over on each of their next four possessions. Geneseo goalkeeper Anna Smith made the two saves and finished with 11 on the day. Casie Damore added an insurance goal in the final minute.

Simon and Marissa Cussins had four goals each for the Blue Devils. Goalkeeper Casey Chiesa was credited with 11 saves and had a team-high four groundballs. Taylor Wingerden was credited with four caused turnovers.

The Blue Devils are back in action Saturday at Oneonta.
