FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State won Game One with a walk-off hit Sunday, then carried the momentum into Game Two of a SUNYAC doubleheader sweep of Brockport.
Brittany Lis dropped an opposite-field single into right to end Game One with a 3-2 win. The Blue Devils then scored four runs in the first inning of Game Two and improved to 16-2 overall, 4-0 in the SUNYAC, with a 10-1 win in Game Two.
Fredonia State pitchers were solid in both games. Shaking off first-inning wildness which led to both Brockport runs, junior
Ashley LaPorta settled down for a five-hit, seven-strikeout victory in Game One. She improved her personal mark to 3-0. In Game Two, sophomore
Alyssa Brognano was perfect through three innings, yielded an unearned run in the fourth, and finished with a two-hitter. She recorded four strikeouts and improved to 5-1.
For the Golden Eagles (12-4, 0-2 SUNYAC), Danielle Sage had a two-run single in the first inning of the first game. Stephanie Geer was tagged with the loss, her first after six straight wins to open the season. Susanna Johnson had an RBI single in the second game.
The Blue Devils trailed 2-0 when the came to the plate for the first time Sunday. After
Katie Bartkowiak walked and stole second, and
Brittany Lis walked. Bartkowiak scored when Lis stole second and the throw sailed into center field.
The Blue Devils tied the score 2-2 in the fourth Bartkowiak led off the inning with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Tina Schwartzmeyer, and scored on an RBI single by
Hannah Vesneske.
Brockport looked like it was about to threaten in the fifth inning with back-to-back singles by Caitlyn Rena and Jenna Yates, but Blue Devil right fielder
Lauren Larson threw out Rena trying to advance to third on the hit by Yates.
The game-winning hit by Lis came after Bartkowiak singled, stole second, and went to third on a throwing error.
Wasting no time in Game Two, the Blue Devils used five hits and one Brockport error for its four runs. Vesneske, Larson,
Julie Arnold, and
Anne Wasik had RBI hits. Wasik was also in the middle of a six-run, eight-hit third inning. Her two-run double followed singles by Larson and Arnold. Bartkowiak, Schwartzmeyer, Lis, and
Michelle Lattner later added RBI hits in the inning.
The game was stopped via the mercy rule after Brognano set down Brockport in order in the fifth.
The Blue Devils embark on a busy week starting Tuesday with a trip to Medaille, the first of consecutive non-conference doubleheaders. They then travel to Pitt-Bradford on Thursday, Oswego on Friday, and Cortland next Saturday.
