FREDONIA. N.Y. -- The Fredonia State baseball team got a pair of strong pitching efforts from freshmen
Sean Larson and
Steve Sturm to sweep the visiting Hilbert Hawks. The Devils won 9-2 and 7-1.
In the opener, Larson took a shutout into the sixth before surrendering a pair of unearned runs. He struck out five, walked five and gave up five hits to improve his record to 2-0 on the season.
The Devils opened the scoring with five runs in the third. They added three more in the fourth and one in the fifth to account for the nine runs.
Taylor Gahagen had two of the Devils eight hits.
Andy Dlugosz and
Vinnie VanAuker each drove in two runs.
VanAuker pitched a scoreless seventh to preserve the win.
In the nightcap, the Devils got three in the first and two in the second to take an early lead. they added one in the fourth and seventh.
Hilbert scored its lone run in the third on a single, stolen base and a single to start the inning.
Sturm went the distance, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five in seven innings of work in his first college start.
Jon Messina and
Jake Nowak had two hits each. Messina scored three runs, while Gahagen and
Dillon Lowe had two RBI apiece.
The Devils are now 11-7 and are slated to take on Brockport on Tuesday at Ludwig Field. Gametime is 3 p.m.
