POTSDAM, N.Y. – Ashley LaPorta pitched a no-hitter and her teammates backed her with an extra-base attack resulting in a 9-0 SUNYAC victory in five innings Saturday over the Potsdam Bears.
The Blue Devils (19-6 overall, 7-4 SUNYAC) had six extra-base hits – four doubles and two triples. Lauren Larson had a triple, a double, and three RBI. Tina Schwartzmeyer collected two doubles and a single, Danielle Lorenzo a double and a single, and Katie Bartkowiak a triple and two singles.
It was the second no-hitter as a collegian for LaPorta (4-1), who shut down U. Mass-Dartmouth on March 17, 2009. She walked two and struck out five. It was also the first shutout of the season by a Blue Devil pitcher and lowered the team's earned run average to 2.06.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was suspended in the middle of the second inning because of rain, wind, and temperatures in the low-40s. The Blue Devils were leading 3-0 at the time. If the game has bearing in the final conference standings, it will be resumed at a neutral site later this month.
