ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State threatened but was unable to rally to win the second game of its SUNYAC doubleheader Wednesday at Oneonta.
The Blue Devils (8-5, 0-2 SUNYAC) put runners on first and second with one out when Oneonta starting pitcher Christopher Smith walked
Tom Dee and hit
Taylor Gahagen with a pitch. Jake Robinson relieved and recorded two strikeouts to earn the save in a 2-0 Red Dragon victory.
The Red Dragons (7-6, 2-0 SUNYAC) won the opener, 5-1.
A solid pitching perfomance by
Jordan Hibbard was wasted in the 2-0 Game Two loss. Hibbard scattered seven hits, walked two, struck out two, and allowed both Oneonta runs to fall to 2-1 this spring.
Angelo Sciandra pitched one innings of scoreless relief.
Oneonta's Smith lasted 8 1/3 innings. He allowed two hits, walked three, and struck out 10. His team backed him with single runs in the first and fourth innings.
In the opener, the Red Dragons trailed 1-0 before scoring four runs in the last of the fifth inning. They added an insurance run in the last of the sixth.
The Blue Devils, winners of eight of their previous nine games, broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth without the benefit of a hit.
Joe Kephart reached base on an error leading off the inning. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Jon Messina, to third on a infield groundout by Dee, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gahagen.
The Blue Devils had only three hits overall, two by Messina and one by
Brian Sheehan.
Ken Smith allowed two hits over 5 1/3 innings to earn the victory before giving way to Corey Anderson, who got the final four outs.
Brian Lansing was the losing pitcher. The Fredonia State senior allowed four earned runs on three hits plus three walks in 4 2/3 innings.
Andy Dlugosz gave up one run in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
The teams complete their three-game series with a single game at 1 p.m. Thursday.
