Blue Devils win home opener over Wooster

FREDONIA, N.Y -- Fredonia State won its home opener Saturday, 13-5, over The College of Wooster.

Amy Simon, Laura Culhane, and Marissa Cussins had three goals and one assist each as the Blue Devils improved to 5-0, all against non-SUNYAC teams.

Madison Carey had two goals for the Fighting Scots (1-3).

The Blue Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Culhane, Simon assisted by Culhane, and Rachael Reinis, the third coming at the 8:07 mark. Goals by Carey and Nina Dine cut Wooster's deficit to one goal. The Blue Devils scored the next six goals -- two by Simon and one each by Karli Brinthaupt, Cussins, Morgan McNamara, and Culhane -- to take a 9-2 lead at halftime.

Wooster gained some momentum on goals by Eileen Barrer and Clare Nelson-Johnson early in the second half. The Blue Devils scored out the game with four of the last five goals -- two by Cussins, one by Reinis, and one by Culhane.

Casey Chiesa was credited with seven saves while Wooster's Shawna Ferris made 14 stops.

In the field, Fredonia State's Taylor Wingerden ws credited with three ground balls, two caused turnovers, and four draw controls while Simon added three ground balls, two caused turnovers, and three draw controls. For Wooster, Nelson-Johnson had three draw controls, Katie Smart two draw controls and two ground balls, and Cassie Greenbaum one draw control, one ground ball, and two caused turnovers.

During a pre-game ceremony, Simon was recognized for becoming Fredonia State's all-time leading goalscorer when she overtook Kelly Domm last Tuesday vs. St. Lawrence. Domm scored 132 goals and had 168 points from 1998 through 2001. Simon has 138 goals and 159 points through Saturday.
