FREDONIA, N.Y. --- The FredoniaState women's basketball team will look to continue its recent run of success which suddenly has them back in the post-season discussion.
The Blue Devils have won their last two games, and three of their last five, to improve to 5-13 overall. More importantly, they are 3-9 in the SUNYAC, good for eighth place, ahead of Brockport and Potsdam. The top eight teams make the conference tournament.
Nicole Calbi leads the Blue Devils in scoring with 9.5 points per game, including a career-high 24 points in a 73-66 win Tuesday at Brockport. She continues to rank the conference leaders in steals and assists, and leads the Blue Devils in scoring with 9.5 points per game.
Conversely, New Paltz enters the weekend at 11-7 overall and 9-2 in the conference. The Hawks defeated the Blue Devils in an earlier meeting, as did Oneonta, which plays Friday night at BuffaloState before heading to Fredonia for a 2 p.m. Saturday tip-off. The Red Dragons are 15-4 overall and 9-3 in the conference.
Saturday is the date of the annual alumni game by former teams of Blue Devils, the women first, followed by the men. Both games will be played in the morning in Dods Hall.
It is also the celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The first 125 youth to attend the 2 p.m. women's game will receive a commemorative t-shirt. Raffle tickets will be on sale for a chance to win donated items, including some from Buffalo-area sports teams and one New York Jets jersey. Members of the NorthernChautauquaCatholicSchool girls' junior varsity team will play a mini-game during halftime of the women's game.
