BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team traveled to Brockport facing a must-win situation and followed through with a 73-66 victory on Tuesday. The Devils needed a win to gain the upper hand on Brockport as both teams entered the game tied for the final playoff spot.
Things did not look good early, as Brockport opened the game scoring the first 11 points.
Brockport led by as many as 17, leading 28-11, midway through the first half. They held a 33-26 lead at the break.
Fredonia State would open the second half with six straight points to pull within one, 33-32.
The Devils would eventually take their first lead of the game, 44-43, with 13:19 left following an
Anna Riley layup. At one point, the Devils led by as many as 10 points, a 27-point swing from their largest deficit.
The second half was all Fredonia State. The Devils outscored Brockport 47-33 as
Nicole Calbi dominated the period offensively, scoring 19 of her game high 24 points. She hit three of her four three-pointers in the second. For the game, she was 9 of 12 from the field, including 4 of 5 from three-point land. Add to that, three steals and five assists.
Liz Wierbinski also had an efficient night on her way to 11 points. She was 4 of 5 from the field, and 3 of 3 from the line. Riley added eight rebounds to pace the Devils.
The Devils continued their dominance on the boards holding a 46-35 advantage. They were also clutch from the line, converting 19 of 25 free throws (76 percent). The Devils 73-point output tied their season high.
Brockport suffered its sixth straight loss and fell to 2-9 in the SUNYAC and 4-14 overall. They were led by Ellen Story with 14 points and Sarah Alwardt had 14 boards.
Fredonia State (3-9, 5-13) is now tied with Plattsburgh for seventh place in the conference. The Devils play host to Oneonta and New Paltz this Friday and Saturday in Steele Hall.
