ITHACA, N.Y. – Fredonia State sophomores Sarah Ficarro and Ryan Fuller were double winners with NCAA provisional qualifying scores Sunday at the Ithaca Diving Invitational.
Ficarro scored 459.65 points in the 3-meter springboard competition, and 449.60 points off the 1-meter board. She defeated 17 other women entered in the competition, including four teammates.
On the men's side, Fuller defeated an honorable mention All-American from Geneseo with a score of 431.20 points in the 1-meter competition. He also posted a 484.90 points off the 3-meter board, 30 points more than the second-place finisher.
“He blew away the competition,” Fredonia State assistant coach/diving coach John Crawford said. “He was extremely consistent … It was by far the best he's dove in his life.”
It was the first time Fuller has put his name on the NCAA provisional list, while Ficarro is in line to make a return trip to nationals. She earned All-American honors off both boards in 2010.
Other Fredonia State women competing were Breena Cogliandro, Katelyn Haley, Ashley Keller, and Leanne Kies. Haley was third in the 3-meter, while Keller was fifth in the 1-meter.
Joshua Croft and John Rodman took part in the men's competition, which drew 13 entrants. Croft's sixth-place finish in the 1-meter was the best placement by the pair.
Next up for the Blue Devils is the SUNYAC Championship meet Feb. 9 through Feb. 12 at Buffalo.
“They (the divers) needed this meet,” Crawford said. “It was great preparation for the SUNYAC championships. Obviously, I'm very pleased, especially for Ryan Fuller. He's worked hard for a year-and-a-half and it paid off.”
